Dr. MacMillan has been involved with various charitable movements through his lectures, art exhibitions and other activities. He took part in two volunteer activities in disaster areas after the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake of 1995, and he donated proceeds from his art exhibition after the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 to the Tohoku region for recovery efforts. Furthermore, he regularly donates to the TELL group, an institution which provides suicide prevention counseling, and to the charity auction held by the environmental protection NGO, Birdlife International, an organization in which her imperial highness Hisako, Princess Takamado serves as honorary president.

In 2016, The “Sara Fuji” work, one of the Thirty-Six New Views of Mount Fuji, was used on the label of Domaine Peiriere – Cuvee Nagasaki, a special Nagasaki wine sold by Vin Passion Co., Ltd. Sales of this wine help to support the restoration and maintenance of the Churches and Christian Sites in Nagasaki as well as inclusion on the UNESCO Cultural World Heritage list. A portion of the profits (¥102,400 as of September 2016) is donated to a foundation established by Nagasaki Prefecture.

■ Great East Japan Earthquake Volunteer Tour

Observed the 1000 Year Hill of Hope in Iwanuma City, Miyagi and engaged in volunteer work with participants. Participants also heard from representatives living in temporary housing in Ishinomaki City about their lives there. On this occasion, the Dr. MacMillan donated ¥500,000 yen to the Ishinomaki Association of Local Authorities, ¥300,000 to the Federation of UNESCO Associations to provide support to children affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011, and ¥200,000 to the Great Forest Wall Project. 

 

■ Nepal Earthquake of 2015 Support

Dr. MacMillan donated ¥100,000 to the Honmon Butsuryu Sect Myoshin-ji Temple to help support victims in the Nepal Earthquake of 2015.

 

2015

■ Dr. MacMillan donated his artwork “Crane Fuji” (¥300,000) to a charity auction held by international environmental NGO BirdLife International, an organization which has been active in the conservation of habitats of birds and other species.

2014

■ Dr. MacMillan donated his artwork “Crane Fuji” (¥1,000,000) to a charity auction held by the Tokyo English Life Line (TELL).

 

2012

■ Exhibition at the British Embassy, Tokyo

Dr. MacMillan donated a portion of sales of his artwork and collected over ¥3,000,000 in charity donations.

 

■ Exhibition at the Ginza Sony Building

Dr. MacMillan donated a portion of sales from his artwork to Save the Children Japan for Great East Japan Earthquake recovery efforts. He collected over ¥4,000,000 in charity donations.
